Gemin X Biotechnologies to Present at UBS Global Life Sciences Conference
Montréal, Canada – September 17 , 2003 – Gemin X Biotechnologies Inc., a privately held biotechnology company developing novel cancer treatments based on the regulation of apoptosis, announced today that President and CEO Dan Giampuzzi will present an overview of the Company on Wednesday, September 24th at 1:30 PM (EST) during the UBS Global Life Sciences Conference. The conference will take place September 22-25 at The Plaza Hotel in New York City and will feature presentations by the life science industry’s leading public companies, as well as a select group of top privately held biotechnology companies.
Giampuzzi’s presentation will include an update on Gemin X’s progress with its lead product candidate, GX015-070, a small molecule pan-inhibitor of Bcl-2 family proteins that selectively induces apoptosis in cancer cells. Gemin X’s GX015 series of small molecules have improved survival and inhibited tumor growth in animal studies. The Company anticipates filing an IND by the end of 2003 and beginning clinical trials in early 2004, making GX015-070 the first small molecule in this class ever to enter human trials. Giampuzzi will also provide an update on Gemin X’s other preclinical, apoptosis-based cancer program, as well as on the Company’s recent financing activity.
A recording of Gemin X’s presentation at the conference will be available through the Company’s web site at www.geminx.com . The recording will be archived for 30 days.
Apoptosis is the natural process through which the body eliminates diseased or damaged cells. Apoptosis is frequently suppressed in cancer cells by factors such as upregulation of Bcl-2 proteins, which are implicated in up to one-third of all new cancer incidences each year, including cancers of the lymph, breast, lung, prostate and colon. Gemin X’s GX015 small molecules are designed to inhibit anti-apoptotic members of the Bcl-2 protein family, selectively restoring apoptosis in cancer cells and destroying them without affecting normal cells. The GX015 small molecules demonstrated efficacy in multiple animal studies at doses far below their maximum tolerated doses, indicating these compounds may offer superior safety profiles to those of standard chemotherapy agents and radiation.
Gemin X Biotechnologies Inc . specializes in the discovery and development of novel small-molecule cancer therapeutics based on the regulation of apoptosis, the body’s natural ability to destroy injured or damaged cells. Gemin X’s two lead programs focus on pan-inhibitors of Bcl-2 proteins and small molecules that induce apoptosis in p53-defective cancers.
