p53 Independent Mechanism
Functional elimination of the p53 tumor suppressor protein occurs in about half of all malignancies, providing a resistance mechanism to the induction of cancer cell death. It is important therefore to identify cell pathways that result in the selective death of p53-defective cancer cells. One approach utilized by Gemin X exploits chemical biology. The use of small molecule probes to identify cellular targets that can induce apoptosis in the absence of a functional p53 protein is the starting point to develop novel targeted therapies. |
